What are Juvederm and Restylane?
Dermal Fillers
Fillers
Juvederm and Restylane are sanitary gels which contain cross-linked, non animal, hyaluronic acid. These are two products by two major Filler makers of the world i.e Allergen and Galderma Q-Med .
These are made in a lab and are basically proteins . They are inert that is – they dont cause any reaction in the body and hence are safe.
Hyaluronic acid is a natural sugar which is found in the skin. These do not contain any animal or human DNA and currently these skin fillers have a good safety profile. These products have been approved by the FDA. You can use them in the nasolabial fold. If you use Juvederm, then you won’t have a lot of puffiness for a few days after the treatment. Juvederm is kind of smoother too.
What are Juvederm and Perlane Ultra Plus?
These are also cross-linked hyaluronic acids kind of like Juvederm and Restylane but these are thicker and have a higher molecular weight. The company that makes Restylane also makes Perlane. Perlane is good for inserting into those areas where skin filler is dense is needed such as a deep nasolabial fold. You can also use these to add a little volume in your cheeks.
Sculptra: This is poly-L-lactic acid. This is not a line skin fillers but it can be thought of as a volumizer. It is great for facial gauntness with HIV lipdystrophy, for giving back volume to individuals who do not weight much, and the gauntness that runs in some families. It also works great on those patients who are over the age of 60 since plastic surgery becomes a little risky for them. This is difficult to inject so you will need a professional dermatologist.
Fat: This skin filler is yours. This filler is not predictable at all. It can last for months and sometimes even years. This skin filler can be a bit lumpy. You will have swelling and bruising for two weeks or more after this. It is quite hard to find dermatologists who are good at carrying this process out.
Aqamid, Artefill, and Silicone: Many people are against these permanent skin fillers. They will and can look amazing for a while but three months to ten years later they can cause many difficulties. The complications that these skin fillers can cause can be permanent. If your doctors makes the slightest mistake you could even up having to deal with a big problem for the rest of your life.
Radiesse- This is basically made from cartilage and bone in a creamy form. It claims that it will last much longer than HA but sometimes it does not. It can cause many complications and many bumps.
Other HA skin fillers: There are Restylane and Juvederm copycats but they do not have a good safety profile.
How long will Juvederm and Restylane last?
Juvederm and Restylane will usually last for four to six months but that is based on the area that you have treated, the technique of injecting, and your skin skin fillers. Sometimes the effects can last longer than usual and sometimes they can go away quite quickly. Juvederm Ultra Plus and Perlane are quite thick and will last for about six to at least nine months. Cosmoplat will last for around three to four months while Cosmoderm will last a shorter time than Cosmoplast.
How Long Will It Take for Juvederm and Restylane To Start Working?
It can take a couple of days for the skin fillers to settle into the final shape but usually it starts working immediately. It looks much better after a few days. The patients sometimes get shocked at how good they look after the process.
How much do Restylane, Cosmoplast, or Juvederm cost?
If you get Juvederm or Restylane then you will have to pay for every injection that you receive. For example, if you would like to fill up the nasolabial fold it will take around two injections. One injection will cost you from around Rs 20000 to about Rs 30000. Juvederm Ultra Plus and Perlane are the thicker kinds and it will cost more.
What do these treatments feel like? Is using Juvederm and Restylane Painful?
To make you feel relaxed many offices use topical skin anesthetics throughout the injections. They will apply the cream on you and let it sit on your skin for around 30 to around 40 minutes before your appointment. This cream makes you feel comfortable but it also reduces the chance of any bruising to occur.
Many offices provide a dental block. In this you anesthetize the skin underneath the lip with a gel and then inserting a little amount of xylocaine (numbing solution) near the gum line. After the block you will be numb for around an hour or two. A cold pack is given to the patients after the treatment is over in order to decrease the chances of any swelling and uneasiness.
After my filler treatment with Juvederm or Restylane, what will I look like?
Many patients go back to their normal lives after the treatment such as they put their make-up back on. You won’t have a lot of bruising if you keep the no Ibuprofen, Exedrin, no aspirin, or Aleve rule in mind. Some puffiness will occur and mild swelling also has a chance of taking place but that is normal and will most likely go away in a day or two.
There are some patients who actually puff after getting their Restylane procedure done, particularly in the lips area. Some patients do not have any reaction to Juvederm at all and do quite well after they change to it. You can easily cover up the bruises on your lips but it will be hard to cover those bruises around the mouth or eyes. After the treatment your dermatologist might be able to tell you if you will experience a lot of swelling or not.
Will I need to come for maintenance treatments or check-ups with Juvederm and Restylane?
Almost every one of these skin fillers calls for a maintenance one to four times every year but that depends on the skin filler, your body, and the area that the skin filler was injected in. So, yes you will need check-ups and maintenance treatments and your doctor will tell you when you need to get your maintenance treatments.
Who shouldn’t use dermal fillers?
If you are pregnant, if you bruise easily, or are breast feeding, then you should not use Cosmoplast, Restylane or Juvederm.
If you would like to avoid receiving any bruising or swelling then you should:
You should not exercise. You should just walk for a day after the process.
You should not take any Vitamin E for a period of two to three days after and before the procedure.
You should not take any ibuprofen, Aleve, Advil, aspirin, and Exedrin for a week before the treatment and two days after the process. You can use Tylenol.
What are the possible medical side effects that could occur with dermal filler like Restylane or Juvederm?
If you are nursing or are pregnant then you shouldn’t use these products because they have not been tested yet for safety in nursing and pregnancy.
If you have had any facial herpes simples or cold sores around your mouth recently, then this treatment could give rise to a rash. Make sure that you have some prescribed oral tablets.
What are the cosmetic side effects that could possibly occur?
You could end up having swelling for 1 to around 3 days especially if you get injections in your lips. You should ignore making plans for any social events for two days if you are trying Restyalne, Juvederm, or Cosmoplast for the very first time.
After you have gotten your treatment done some reactions related to injections have a chance of occurring such as itching, pain, redness, swelling, tenderness, and discoloration. This will get better in a matter of 3 to 10 days.
The results that you receive from the skin filler that you used can last up to two to nine months. The endurance of these products may vary and every individual can receive a result that differs from others.
Some slight redness or mild bruising can show up near the site of the injections after the treatment and this can last for two to around ten days.
If you take aspirin or drugs that are anti-inflammatory can result to bleeding or more bruising near the injection spot.
Questions and Answers on Fillers:
With my first treatment of skin fillers I had a lot of bruising near the mouth. Will it be like this every time I get the procedure done?
It will most likely not be likes unless you take aspirin or some other blood thinner like Plavix or Coumadin for any medical reason. If you happen to be taking them for any medical reason then do not stop unless your doctor tells you to. Remember, you should not take aspirin; Aleve, ibuprofen, and advil should not be taken for a week before the procedure. Paracetamol is okay to use. It will prevent any bruises from occurring if your doctor numbs you for around 20 to half an hour before the treatment. The cream will help to stop bruises and so will an ice bag at the end of the treatment. If you are numbed before the treatment and provided with an ice bag at the end then you will not have many bruises.
My son’s wedding is coming up and I want to look great. How long before my son’s wedding should I have my Juvederm scheduled?
Most doctors would recommend three to around four weeks before especially if you are getting skin filler done for the first time. This will give you around ten days to heal from bruises if they occur. You shouldn’t wait a week before because you cannot tell what effect your skin filler will have on you. You should go three to four weeks early to have the full treatment done, go 2 weeks before if you need any fine tuning and this way you will be able to recover for a week.
